He is fine being left and loves the car. Does need further lead training and recall work, and socialisation with other dogs which he is not very good at as he tends to bark and lunge, but this does depend on the other dog.

This is what our volunteer had to say about him:

“Milo is a lovely boy and in good condition. He loves attention, fuss and cuddles. He needs lead training and also with a calm dog to learn how to approach and deal with other dogs. Loves his squeaky ball and treats which is a good aid for training. He does have an issue with shadow chasing and will lose focus once fixated.

No possession anxiety, will under instruction at some point will hand over his ball. Lovely dog and very loved; bright boy. Very bouncy, does jump up. Will try and sit on you when you are sat down for fuss and attention.”

Meet Chester who is 4 years old. He is neutered and microchipped and told his vaccinations are up to date. This is what our volunteer has to say about him:

“Chester greeted me quite calmly  in the kitchen despite some whining excitable behaviour beforehand. He had not had a walk that day when I visited and doesn’t see his owners every day so naturally he was keen to come in.

He has a lovely playful nature and enjoys Frisbees and sticks although he is never let off his training length lead. He would undoubtedly benefit from more exercise and stimulation generally starting with secure fields to test recall. He likes to walk in front on his long lead but isn’t a puller. He certainly checked back in with us when we were walking to make all was well.

While out he did crouch down in stalking mode and made eye contact with another dog. That dog returned the stare and Chester did bark at it but he wasn’t interested in it after we had passed it and we also passed other dogs who ignored him and there was no reaction. Should be an easy fix as he can be distracted with a toy and just needs some direction.

His owners haven’t been living with Chester for some months. In that time he has been living with a young couple in the home he has lived in since a puppy. This has resulted in a lack of meaningful exercise and it is fair to say he is getting nowhere near enough opportunity to burn off his energy.  As a result he is now considerably overweight needing to shed a few kilos and improve his fitness level. He is long coated as a rule but has had a hair cut so he looks more like a semi long coat.

He is not a problem with visitors and has no food possession issues. He will hang on to toys if he can. For invasive procedures at the vet he has previously been sedated beforehand but not for routine trips for boosters. He’s good in the car, not sick or excessively noisy.

There is a good chance he could live with children in a sensible environment. He has been around babies and various young children and he is not phased by them although hasn’t lived with them.

He’s likely to chase cats but a pretty straight forward young man with no known allergies or health problems. He just needs a committed forever home.”

This lovely lad is Prince who was 7 in January. He is neutered and microchipped but unsure if his vaccinations are up to date. Good with children and neutral with other dogs. Unknown with cats in the home but has been around livestock all of his life. Being rehomed due to a relationship split so current owner struggling for time and finances.

Prince does get ‘itchy’ and needs his ears regularly cleaned. He would probably benefit from being on steroids which are not expensive but would need to be looked into. Fine being left and loves the car. Good on lead and basic commands, but will chase cars! This is what our volunteer had to say about him:

“Prince is a well mannered and calm dog. He barked when I knocked on the door but I was greeted nice and calmly once the door was opened. He then lay quietly on the floor whilst I spoke to his owner.

He looked in good condition. Signs he licks his back feet and does have an issue with his left ear. He didn’t mind it being rubbed though so not sore.

All in all a very well mannered, balanced dog that would benefit from someone who has more time. Loves a treat but not toy orientated, at least there was nothing there to try.”

This lad’s time was up:

“Another gorgeous & well behaved boy in desperate need of a chance. He’s a friendly boy that is clean in his kennel & knows some basic commands like sit & give paw. If you are a rescue that can give him the chance he needs & so deserves then please let me know as he’s on borrowed time now sadly?”

Dante was 3 in December and according to his microchip he is a Mali cross Fox Red Lab. Vaccinations to be restarted and will be neutered.

Dante has been a sweetheart with everyone he has met and walks nicely on lead. No adverse reaction to other dogs so far.

This lad would fit into an active family home as he is full of energy and fun!

UPDATE

Dante, who was called Axel, was assessed by one of our volunteers early 2024 and his owner emailed to say he had been rehomed! Obviously not a great job as the poor lad then ended up being picked up as a stray and was facing death!

This is Dante’s original write up:

“Axel is a Mali cross Fox Red Lab! He was 3 in December and is microchipped but not neutered and vaccinations are out of date.  Here is what our volunteer had to say about him:

“I met Axel this weekend – what a lovely ball of energy he is! He is also a stunning looking dog, with a soft and fun nature. The owner put Axel in his cage for my arrival but he bounded over to me as soon as he had a chance.

This boy is not for someone who wants a quiet life – he was super excited to meet me and that excitement didn’t wane in the whole time I was there. Although given his breeding (a mix of two very intelligent dogs that need a lot of exercise and stimulation) and the fact that he is still entire – that isn’t surprising.

He seemed to be constantly thinking about what was going to happen next – although when he stood still long enough for me to stroke his head he was very happy to stand still and let me do that. There’s no badness in him – the owners rescued him themselves from a free ad, as they wanted to ensure he was safe, but their circumstances have changed and he can now be left up to 10 hours a day in the home (with a doggy cam) and isn’t walked for as long and as regular as he used to be. He really does need someone who can give him the time and commitment he needs.

He knows quite a few commands and is toy driven so easy to train. We took him for a short walk – he did pull initially (and he is a strong dog) but he did listen to owner’s commands for heel and the owner told me when he’s not as excited/distracted he does respond well to this and other training.

Axel currently lives with a Jack Russell who really doesn’t like him (the other reason the owners feel they have to rehome him as they have had the JR since a pup). He takes correction from the JR when she snaps and is apparently a bit of a melt about it rather than becoming aggressive. There was a third dog on the home (husky x corgi) who got on well with Axel sadly passed away last year.

Axel is gorgeous and would make someone a fantastic dog – easy to train, full of energy and playfulness, and a sweet personality.”

 

Vader

Vader

Vader is only 1 year old and is in need of a new home as he is too boisterous for their young son. He is microchipped and we are told vaccinated. This is what our volunteer had to say about him:

“Vader has the potential to be a fantastic dog but he lacks manners, training and stimulation.
On entering the property I was met full frontal by him, not aggressive, just boisterous, jumping up and, as I say without manners. There was another husky type bitch who tolerated him beautifully as he fell on her and generally acted like a giant puppy.
I didn’t engage with him until he calmed down, which he did and I was able to interact with him. Even after knowing him for a short time he was keen to learn and is very food and toy motivated.
The owners explained that they cannot walk him as he is too strong pulling them over, he also barks and lunges at other dogs.
Vader does not do well left alone, and the damage to the door behind him in the picture, was caused by Vader.
They also state that he is very good with their older children but growls at the toddler and they are fearful of that, although there has been no escalation beyond growling, however they put a muzzle on Vader if he growls.
In my opinion, Vader needs exercise and training by someone who has experience of the breed, and soon. He is not in the right environment currently, a small house with a small garden and no exercise, but could be an awesome dog in the right hands.
I really hope we can help Vader. The owners were very keen to rehome  him.”

Young Ruby is just 10 months old and is a GSD cross Mali. She is microchipped and vaccinated. This is what our volunteer had to say about her:

“Met Ruby at her home. Currently not been exercised due to owner’s ill health. As you can imagine the dog is climbing the walls and has no access to a garden or any outside space. In spite of this and after some time, Ruby was calm. Very treat orientated and showed good obedience skills. She has been loved and cared for but since her owner’s cancer diagnosis, a major op due in May, Ruby will need to be rehomed. All jabs etc up to date and is used to having her teeth cleaned. Absolutely no signs of any aggression and food/toys can be removed from her with no problem. A very attractive girl in great condition.

Travels well in the car. Has no recall and not good on lead/harness – probably due to over excitement when she does go out. Is good with large dogs not small ones. Diet wise cannot tolerate chicken but eats a complete dry meal with vegetables and apples mixed in to give texture.

Ruby is affectionate and would make a great addition to anyone with a knowledge of the breed. As she is very lively perhaps a no to children under 10 but she is a very bright and loving dog who is screaming out for exercise and space.”

What can I say about this gorgeous young man! Levi is just 8 month old and already on his second home. His current owner got him through Pets4Homes at 10 weeks old as his first owners decided he was too much with a baby! Why he got him, who knows! Levi is being left 12 plus hours a day and his owner has decided he hasn’t got the time or money for him. Our volunteer was so horrified we lifted him straight away.

Levi is microchipped, but vaccinations are being checked. We are told he is good with other dogs, playful and curious, smaller dogs he wants to pay but a bit cautious with larger dogs. Unknown with cats but did meet children in his first home for a few weeks.

Levi was super excited at our volunteer’s visit, hardly surprising, did jump up a little but nothing excessive or aggressive. He is trained to use a toilet mat in the house because he is left so long and has not had any formal lead training or recall work. Knows Sit, Paw and Stay. Our volunteer was unable to walk him as his owner didn’t have time!

Levi is a real sweetie and just wanted cuddles, and is amazingly well balanced considering his sorry start to life. Now in foster with other dogs, this super young lad will fit into most homes who are prepared to put in the time on his training and socialisation that he has missed out on so far.

We received the following:

“Seeking a rescue space only is this gorgeous little muffin. Meet Puzzle he is a Sable GSD. Approx 10-14 months, Male, entire and uber friendly. No reactivity seen to other dogs, but craves human attention. Currently shedding but loves a good brush through. Young boy that with training to help typical young behaviour will be amazing. He is on Derby area and can only be released to a rescue placement no private rehoming x”

Puzzle was not microchipped but we estimate him to be a year old. Vaccinations to be restarted and he is still entire.

Puzzle is a friendly lad but can be nervous of men when first meeting which may something about his past. Been fine with the other large dogs. No young children as we do not know his history and unknown with cats.

Puzzle will need a GSD experienced home please that can give him the training and socialisation a dog of his age requires.

We were sent the following:

“EXTREMELY URGENT HAS SERVED LEGAL DAYS AND WE HAVE NO KENNELS AT ALL 😭💔

Hoping she wins a heart ❤️ Meet Kaya she’s not chipped but her teeth are so white so possibly young adult. Can be in a rush to barge out her kennel (but is slowly improving). Ignores the majority of dogs passing her kennel, or when walking by them, however will give the odd bark. Easily corrects if she starts to pull on her lead and doesn’t like the hose shen its being used. Enjoys a good back scratch and nuzzles in for more fuss. Enjoys her food but tends to drag then tip her bowl rather than eat out of it and possibly hasn’t had many treats in her life as taken her a while to learn what they are and how to take them from your hand. Overall a friendly girl with a very bushy waggy tail ❤️ She is in Derby area NO ROOM FOR STRAYS COMING IN SO HIGHLY AT RISK 😭💔 RESCUE ONLY NO PRIVATE REHOMING”

We estimate Kaya is about 18 months old. She was not microchipped but is now. Vaccinations have been restarted.

Kaya is a friendly girl and seems to be fine around the other large dogs. Older children only as we have no history and unknown with cats.

Beautiful Kaya would like  a GSD experienced home please who can give her the exercise, training and love she deserves.

Buddy is just 2 years old. Another lad who found himself in council kennels and his time was up.

Buddy is microchipped but apparently he was with a foster home as his owner had moved abroad but they can’t now be contacted!

Buddy is currently entire and vaccinations to be restarted. He was very scared in the council kennels but has come out of his shell with us and loves playing with Avery who came out on the same day.

No young children as we do not know his history. Been fine around the other large dogs so far. Unknown with cats.

Buddy will fit into most GSD experienced homes who can give him the training and socialisation a lad of his age needs. Would live happily with a female.

Why we do what we do

German Shepherd Rescue Elite was not only set up to help as many unwanted, abandoned and neglected German Shepherds as possible, but to also offer education to the general public on the responsibilities / pros / cons of owning a large working breed dog and to be able to offer help and advice so hopefully we can become the prevention for once instead of always being the cure.
