Becky is 3 years old. She is spayed, microchipped and fully vaccinated. Becky is good with older children and most other dogs however she will react to over excitable dogs! A no to cats.
Becky originally came from Slovakia were she was kept outdoors. She was then caged during the day and allowed to roam at night, so she does now have a strong aversion to crates. The owner passed away so her current owners took her in. They have worked really hard with her as she had no boundaries or manners. She is not keen on strangers but greeted our volunteer with excitement but soon calmed down and took treats.
She takes time to settle on lead due to excitement, and is kept on a long lead. Has basic commands. Very food orientated and happily plays with toys. Her issues, she still guards her food which is being worked with and she does not like the top of head being touched. I would suspect she has been hit on the head by someone in her past.
Becky is a lovely girl who has come from a yard dog in Slovakia into the responsive girl of today as her current owners have worked hard with her. Sadly there are issues with her and the family’s current dog which is why she is looking for a new home.
In a stable home with the right direction and firm but fair handling, Becky will make a super addition.
This is what her owner’s say about her:
“Whoof there! 🐶
My name is Becky. I am 3 years old and I come from Slovakia. No worries though, I understand English commands and my favourite thing to hear is “good girl”.
I was brought up in a village as a security dog. I lived in a house with a big garden where I could run freely. I was not very familiar with ‘going on walks’ or ‘meeting other friends’ concepts. Sometimes, other village dogs would come visit me but only the smart ones that could climb over the fence. My social skills are therefore quite clumsy but I love confident and brave dogs. I also get along with the submissive ones that don’t mind my clumsiness. Unfortunately, all other dogs scare me too much and then I react and scare them, probably even more. I am a big dog but I must confess I am a scaredy cat. I did not see much of the world outside my fenced garden. I used to be kept in a kennel and sleep outside all by myself since I was little.
A year ago, my owner sadly passed away. My other owner struggled to give me the same level of command so I was getting more and more confused and frustrated. Then one day, she took me on a road trip to England to visit her daughter and son in law. Yes, I am a well travelled dog with hotel experience. I love being in the car.
The family really liked me and could see the good dog in me, I was just in need of a proper routine and training. They decided to keep me and I’ve lived with them for 10 months now. I’ve learned to walk nicely on lead and listen to basic commands. I am very responsive to treats, which helps a lot with my learning. I love food and I am very good at waiting for permission to eat. I spend lots of time playing, my absolute favourite are squeaky balls that I can chase around the house and search for them under the sofa or furniture. I love when my humans get involved in the game and hide my toys and make me seek or help me to get my toys when i’ve managed to get them stuck somewhere. I’ve also become more of a pet and love to be invited on the sofa for daily cuddle time. I know there is still a lot for me to learn but I’m very smart and improving every day.
Unfortunately, as I already mentioned, I don’t like dogs that are scared of me, and my new owners have one of those. She is fluffy, reactive and reminds me of a cat. Yes, I also don’t like cats. We tried to get along but it seems impossible for either of us to overcome our fear. It takes a lot of effort to always keep us separate in the house and even though my owners love me they cannot keep me forever.
For my current owners personal reasons I am going to need a new home before the end of February 2023. If not then my new owners need to return me to Slovakia. They are hoping that with my new training and routine that my previous owner will be able to keep me and learn my new routine. However, the best outcome would be to find a new home in the UK with a person who has experience with German shepherds. I would love to be the only dog in the house to get all the attention or I’m happy to be with a dog friend who is able to handle a nervous dog.
So I am now looking for a new forever home. A human that loves and understands German Shepherds and can give me the right care. I will give back lots of love. Lots!”
Becky has been rehomed back in Slovakia where she is doing really well.
