Deeks is a Mali / Mali X, male, aged approximately 12 months who recently came into rescue from the pound. He is a happy-go-lucky and affectionate pup who greets adults like he has known them all his life. He really does wear his heart on his sleeve!
Deeks has adjusted well to his kennel and routine and has been friendly to all volunteers from the instant he arrived.
He can get a little over excited as he is still very much a puppy, he will sometimes jump up and at times mouths playfully which will require continued training that the vollies have already started.
Deeks walks fairly nicely on the lead and longline, albeit he can sometimes pull a little in his excitement to explore. He is very playful and toy driven, he loves to run around after a ball or squeaky toy and will bring it back to keep the game going. Whilst out of his kennel he is more interested in toys and cuddles then he is treats but when he does take them, he is gentle.
Deeks is a real cuddle monster, stopping regularly whilst out walking to come in for a cuddle which seems to be purely for affection and not reassurance. He loves nothing more than rolling around in the grass whilst having a tummy tickle!
This young boy hasn’t been taught any basic commands prior to reaching the rescue kennels, such as sit, come, down etc. He does however, seem to be eager to please. The vollies have started basic training and he is doing well but he prefers to have a fuss or toy as a reward over treats.
Deeks has met other dogs whilst out walking and when he sees them, he gets very excited and can pull towards them. When he has met other dogs up close, he appears to lack the finesse of polite doggy manners which should be resolved with ongoing socialisation. He does not show any aggression, he simply appears overexcited and somewhat clumsy.
Deeks has also met another of our rescue dogs, Zeus, and they played happily with Zeus teaching Deeks a few doggy manners which Deeks appeared to take onboard. Therefore, Deeks could possibly live with the right dog after successful introductions.
The vollies have noticed that Deeks is not keen on lawnmowers and strimmer’s. He will growl and bark at them and may try to show them his opinion if he can get close enough! This will require ongoing training to make him more comfortable with such things.
From our time with him so far, he doesn’t seem to shy away from anything new and would always prefer to move forward and explore new things which will help with his ongoing exposure to the world.
Deeks travels well in the car, settling down in his crate without any noise. However, he does sometimes need some gentle encouragement to get into the car to start with. This is something that the vollies are working on with him.
Whilst walking, Deeks does not appear overly interested in birds or squirrels. He is yet to meet a cat or go to the vets so his reaction towards those is currently unknown.
Deeks arrived into rescue from the pound, so no history is known for this young boy. He has shown an adverse reaction towards the kennel owners’ young granddaughter and a milder reaction to other children whilst walking at the park, which will mean he will need an adult only household. His reactivity to children will need continued work by his new owners.
Deeks has now left us to start his life as a working dog.
