We were asked to take in this young lad by another rescue. Only a baby still but not had the socialisation or training a lad of his age needs. Maverick is microchipped and vaccinated. Not yet neutered.

“We were contacted by a vets about six month Maverick. The vets had been called to put Maverick to sleep because he had bitten in the home but the vets contacted us and the owners were pleased to find him a safe place. Maverick is a scared lad and needs a fair bit of socialisation, he’s got a lot to learn.”

No young children due to his lack of socialisation. This lad will need an experienced GSD home to help get him on track and continue his training and socialisation.

Maverick was adopted but sadly due to a change in circumstances he is now looking for a new home again and will need a home where he has fair but firm handling to get him on track. This is what his current home has to say:

Maverick is 13 months old. He is handsome, with a semi long black and tan coat.  He currently weighs 35kgs  and stands 67cms at the shoulder.  He is slender and very agile.  He is in good condition, with no health issues.   He is a very strong and resolute ‘puller’ on the lead.  We have tried several training strategies and different headcollars with, it has to be said, limited success.

Maverick has high prey drive and is ball focused.  Under certain circumstances, whilst out, he can become very over excited. This can be  triggered by things such as sight of another dog, passing cyclist or joggers.  If these triggers are some way away, he can be distracted with treats. If they are too close for him to cope with he goes into the ‘zone’, barks lunges and is difficult to control, he then takes some time to calm down. However, if he is introduced to strangers in a calm way, he will allow them to give him treats.

Maverick does enjoy training and learns quickly.  At home he is well behaved and we use ‘brain games’, such as hide and seek and scent work to provide mental stimulation, which he enjoys.  In the garden he loves to play with his ball. He doesn’t have any food or toy aggression.  He is crate trained, we use it for ‘time out’ if he gets too excited and when we go out.  When we go out and leave him in the crate, he will whine for a short time, but soon calms down.  At night he sleeps downstairs in the hallway/kitchen, without any problems.  He is fine with fireworks.

Maverick needs a considerable amount of time and patience devoted to his socialisation and training whilst out in public.  At present, I’m not in a position to give him the time he needs.”

Maverick has been adopted.

Why we do what we do

German Shepherd Rescue Elite was not only set up to help as many unwanted, abandoned and neglected German Shepherds as possible, but to also offer education to the general public on the responsibilities / pros / cons of owning a large working breed dog and to be able to offer help and advice so hopefully we can become the prevention for once instead of always being the cure.
