Rico is coming up to 2 years of age. He is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. We were asked to take Rico in from another rescue as he was struggling in their kennels.
“He belonged to a couple who had him from young, but sadly 9 months ago they fell ill and then he wasn’t walked and stayed in the house with them all the time. The write up from the home says he was no problem other than lack of socialisation with other dogs.
But since coming into kennels he is struggling to cope. We have him meeting my greyhound through a fence in one of our compounds and he isn’t fixated and can be easily distracted with food or tennis balls which he loves. He is mostly vocal with her.
But he lacks much impulse control and will grab hold of clothing and tug on people, this can be stopped again with food or tennis balls but does need an experienced handler. I think this is mostly driven by his high stress and arousal levels in kennels.
He shows so much potential and in the space of 2 weeks we have trained him to search for tennis balls in our stable yard which he loves.”
Rico is now in foster with other large dogs and is no problem other than sometimes getting over exuberant. A typical young man who just needs a GSD experienced home to continue his training, socialisation and boundaries. Should be no problem living with another dog. No young children as we do not know his full history and unknown with cats.
Can you help this handsome lad?
