Rio is available for adoption through GSRE – this is what his current owner says about him.

Rio is a 14-month-old, male, black and tan German Shepherd with short length coat. He is not currently neutered but is vaccinated, microchipped and flea/worm treated. He has no known food allergies but can be fussy with what he eats. He is currently eating Butcher tripe daily. He has no disclosed medical issues and is described as being fine at the vets.

Rio is being rehomed through GSRE through no fault of his own.

Rio currently lives with a 2-year-old child who he gets on well with and is described as being very good and gentle with them. He is selective towards other dogs – some dogs he is wary of but others he simply wants to play with. He currently lives with another dog, a French Bulldog, who he plays with. He is described as being playful yet submissive around the other resident dog. He is not good around cats (has a scar on his nose as proof!) and his reaction to livestock is not known.

Rio will bark at the postie when they come to the house but he didn’t bark at the GSRE assessor’s arrival at the home – he did jump up a little in a playful manner. It is not known how long he is left alone for but is crated when he is – he will chew items left inside his crate, such as bedding. His reaction to travelling in the car is getting better as he gets older and more experienced. He lives indoors and is fully housetrained.

Rio will pull when walked on a lead so he is walked on a head-collar at present. He will pull if he sees another dog, but generally this is because he wants to go and play with them. His recall is described as being selective (wants to go off and play, no aggression) and he knows basic commands. He does not show any possessive tendencies over food or toys. He is an active boy who reportedly gets walked for an hour daily. At present, he does seem to enjoy ‘gardening’ and loves to squeeze through the fence to go and spend time and say hello to the neighbours (playful, no aggression).

During the time the GSRE assessor spent with Rio, this is what they said about him.
When the assessor visited the home, Rio did not challenge or bark at them in any way. He jumped up once to say hello and seemed happy to have them there. After sitting with the assessor for a while, Rio took himself off to play with the other resident dog and the 2-year-old child, who he was very gentle around. He took a treat from the assessor but only to tease the other dog and the child with in a playful way. He also let the assessor have the treat back off him without any issues.

Rio isn’t hugely toy or treat focused but did initiate a game of tug with the assessor. He happily left the toy when asked and backed away, sitting nicely, waiting for the game to start again.

Rio just needs a bit of direction, consistency and boundaries reinforcing and of course a bit of love, time and patience. It is believed that he could live with another dog following successful introductions and seeing him around the baby in the house he should be fine living with children too. An active home with experience of the breed would assist this boy no-end, especially as he approaches his ‘teenage’ phase! Stimulation, physically and mentally, would enrich his world and help tire him out.

The assessor stated that if they could have taken Rio home with them, they certainly would have done. He has got the makings of being a cracking dog!

Why we do what we do

German Shepherd Rescue Elite was not only set up to help as many unwanted, abandoned and neglected German Shepherds as possible, but to also offer education to the general public on the responsibilities / pros / cons of owning a large working breed dog and to be able to offer help and advice so hopefully we can become the prevention for once instead of always being the cure.
