May I introduce Loki who is still just a baby. He is microchipped and fully vaccinated. Loki came into our care mid June. We were contacted by an evening vet who had got him signed over to themselves as his owner had brought him in to be put to down. A volunteer went and collected him straight away and she has been fostering and working him since.

Loki was living with a family who obviously had little if any experience of the breed. We are told they only let him outside when on lead, and were told to keep him crated for 4 hours at a time so he rested properly. We are not sure what else was going on, but he was terrified when he made the odd mistake in the house, and even if the door was open to the garden, would not cross the threshold without permission. This poor little lad was obviously so confused and frustrated he had taken to spinning and grabbing his own tail. The evening we collected him, he had spent the day at the daytime vets having x-rays of his tail done to rule out any physical issues. He was fine at the vets but we are told he started spinning as soon as he saw his owners. His owners decided it was neurological and hence took him back a few hours later for euthanasia!

Loki is lucky he is with an experienced foster home who have coaxed him out of his nervousness in some areas, and of course their dogs have helped too. He has spun on a few occasions but triggers of anxiety or over excitement were identified and it was possible to distract him out of them. He is improving all the time blesshim.

Loki would need to live in a similar home that can give him the calm and confidence he needs, and definitely needs to be living with other dogs. This lad deserves a good life after being screwed up as a baby!

Loki, now called Bear, has been adopted by his foster home.

Why we do what we do

German Shepherd Rescue Elite was not only set up to help as many unwanted, abandoned and neglected German Shepherds as possible, but to also offer education to the general public on the responsibilities / pros / cons of owning a large working breed dog and to be able to offer help and advice so hopefully we can become the prevention for once instead of always being the cure.
